Biology and human biology

To find articles on any of these topics, look through the Science, technology & computers databases list

General

We've tried to pull together relevant resources to cover most topics studied.  If we've missed something, email us and let us know.

These are some general books you might find useful:

  • Biology demystified by Dale Layman
  • Life, the science of biology by William Purves

      Animal behaviour, form & function

    • Animal structure and function by Cecie Starr

To find additional books, try this search:

Plant processes, form, function & responses

        Cell biology & micro-organisms

      • The cell cycle: an introduction by Andrew Murray
      • The way of the cell: molecules, organisms and the order of life by Franklin Harold

To find additional books, try these searches:

          Contemporary issues in biology

A word of caution - due to the nature of these topics a lot of the material will be biased to one side, or the other.  As they are so topical, the information in books may not be as up-to-date as journal articles.

          Genetically modified organisms

You can find other books about this topic by using the following searches:

          Biotechnology & stem cells

As stem cell research is so recent, the only other books we have on this topic are documents from the European Union. You can find these by using the following search:

For a more general biotechnology search try:

Some good online information about stem cells:

          Biological Control including calicivirus

For books about the calicivirus, try this search:

Practical investigation - using the whelk as an example

This achievement standard is quite detailed.  Your best bet is to read through the standard to get an idea of what you're supposed to do.

For the whelk in particular, try these websites:

ARC  - a document which discusses the environment in which whelks live.  It is a PDF file, and to find where 'whelks' are mentioned in the document - click on the binocular icon and type whelk into the search box.

Auckland Museum - this is a PDF file, and to find where 'whelks' are mentioned in the document - click on the binocular icon and type whelk into the search box.

If you're studying another organism and having difficulty finding information on it - email the teens team for some help.
