Whether you're trying to do research for school or for interest, it's sometimes hard to figure out where to start.
There's a lot of information out there - but trying to find what you want, when you want it, and in a form you can use - is getting more and more difficult. Librarians have dealt with these issues for years and it's this experience that has led to the development of this website. It's meant to help learners of all ages navigate the information maze.
What is information literacy?
Information literacy is the ability to:
- Recognise a need for information
- Identify and locate appropriate information sources
- Know how to access information contained in these sources
- Evaluate the quality of information obtained
- Organise the information
- Use the information effectively
We've used the Big6™ as the basis of this package. Big6™ is a set of skills designed to provide a strategy for becoming information literate. Big6™ is copyright © (1987) Michael B. Eisenberg and Robert E. Berkowitz. For more information, visit www.big6.com.
We've given examples for some of the stages of the journey, based upon the NCEA achievement standards for History Level One - "Yesterday's Teen". Thanks to the Ministry of Education for allowing us to use this, and other, NCEA achievement standards.
