There's a novel set in Britain at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis that gives you some idea of how normal people felt about the threat inherent in the crisis.  It's called The fire-eaters, and is by David Almond.


There's also the movie Thirteen days (starring Kevin Costner) that is based on the Crisis.  It is rated M - so is suitable for ages 16 years and over.
