Philip Pullman

Cover image of Golden compass. Philip Pullman was born in Norwich in 1946. He spent some of his childhood in Australia and met Batman and Superman comics while there. He used to be a teacher and he based some of his novels on plays he wrote for his students.

He finds Blu-tack and Post-it Notes extremely helpful with his writing process.

He is most famous for the His Dark Materials trilogy. He also did something no other children's or teens' author has done before - won the Whitbread Award!

Some of his books:

The Sally Lockhart novels

Sally is not your typical Victorian heroine. She has had an unconventional upbringing, which means she is very comfortable with guns and accounts. After the death of her father Sally is left to make her controversial way in life. A life that is never boring but is, occasionally, life-threatening.

  1. The Ruby in the smoke
  2. The shadow in the north
  3. The tiger in the well
  4. The tin princess

His Dark Materials trilogy

The quest of Lyra in a world similar, but not the same, as ours.

  1. The golden compass or Northern lights
  2. The subtle knife
  3. The amber spyglass

There's also Lyra's Oxford and a play, based on the novels - His Dark Materials.

The butterfly tattoo

Chris falls in love - and, in pursuing his love, places his trust in the wrong person.
