About to become a student? You probably already know that studying is expensive. Figuring out how to pay for it can be tricky, but by being organised you can save yourself both money and time.
Student loans and allowances
Loans and allowances are for those of us who don’t have savings or a kind relative who will help pay our fees! You can find out how to apply at the Studylink website. It has different sections for loans and allowances, and how to get extra help with expenses like health or child care.
Scholarships
Scholarships are a great way to finance your study (for free!) and there is a huge range to apply for. Ask at your institution’s scholarships office, and search the BreakOut database (needs a personal membership barcode and PIN).
Getting a part-time job
Student Job Search helps students find work over the summer and during semester. Visit their website to join up and search for a job.
Living on a student budget
It’s not easy, but little things do help. Make sure you get a tertiary bank account and other student discounts. Read the 8 tips for a sorted student and create a budget on the www.sorted.org website. |
