Manuscripts Online serves as an access point for the New Zealand Manuscripts collection held in Special Collections - about 1.5 linear kilometres of material relating to New Zealand from the early 19th century to the present.
The database will eventually include the collection of letters and manuscripts donated by Sir George Grey.

Key content
The collection includes the records of clubs, businesses, schools, churches and other organisations as well as personal diaries, journals and letters.
Auckland City Libraries has letters from key figures in the country's early colonial history, such as Captain Hobson, Bishop Selwyn, Samuel Marsden, James Busby and James Reddy Clendon.
There are also shipboard journals written by British immigrants, postcards sent home from Gallipoli and letters from Robin Hyde, Frank Sargeson and other well-known authors.
There is a wealth of materials relating to the performing arts in Auckland from Mercury Theatre, Theatre Corporate, the late Phil Warren and other sources.
