Manuscripts Online

Manuscripts Online serves as an access point for the New Zealand Manuscripts collection held in Special Collections - about 1.5 linear kilometres of material relating to New Zealand from the early 19th century to the present.

The database will eventually include the collection of letters and manuscripts donated by Sir George Grey.

Key content

The collection includes the records of clubs, businesses, schools, churches and other organisations as well as personal diaries, journals and letters.

Auckland City Libraries has letters from key figures in the country's early colonial history, such as Captain Hobson, Bishop Selwyn, Samuel Marsden, James Busby and James Reddy Clendon.

There are also shipboard journals written by British immigrants, postcards sent home from Gallipoli and letters from Robin Hyde, Frank Sargeson and other well-known authors.

There is a wealth of materials relating to the performing arts in Auckland from Mercury Theatre, Theatre Corporate, the late Phil Warren and other sources.

Search tips

Search for manuscripts using:

  • Keyword search (type in whatever you like)
  • Advanced search (lets you pick terms for a more exact search)

For some of the larger manuscripts, you can also download a detailed inventory of the manuscripts contents as a PDF document.

For more detailed advice on finding manuscripts, see our webpage How to search Manuscripts Online, or email the manuscripts librarian.
