Indexes to New Zealand births, deaths and marriages
These are available on microfiche until 1990, in the Auckland Research Centre, with a computer based index for 1991-1997. This will at least confirm the name, and if a birth or death confirm the area of registration and possible months when registered.

Funeral directors records
Funeral directors records give similar information to a death certificate. Below is a small list of Auckland funeral directors and their contact details, but there are many more organisations out there. Contact the funeral director only when you have proof of which funeral director was involved such as from a death notice, and the date of death.
