Sir George Grey's interest in language and customs drove him to collect vast amounts of information from Māori, in particular, Māori leaders across New Zealand. Leaders featured are:
Hone Heke of Ngāpuhi Matene
Te Whiwhi and Tamihana Te Rauparaha of Ngāti Toa
Rangatira Te Rangi Ka Heke of Ngāti Rangiwewehi
Tukino Te Heuheu of Ngāti Tuwharetoa
The papers cover the years 1850-1900 and the subject range is extensive, featuring all facets of Māori culture including war, language, songs, proverbs, genealogy, protocols, chants and prayers. Written by Māori in Te Reo Māori, some of the collection has been translated or published. Some of this collection has been added to Iwidex that you can search now.
