Learning skills

There are many reasons for looking at learning skills and styles amongst children.  It may be that you are interested in understanding more about why girls and boys learn differently, you may be interested in different learning styles, or it could be that your child has learning difficulties that you want to help them with.

Here are some resources to help you learn more about learning skills for children, and helping children with learning difficulties.

Roadblocks to learning: understanding the obstacles that can sabotage your child's academic success

Lawrence J. Greene

More than 70 types of learning impediments and counterproductive behaviours are explored in this guide.  Included in the book are discussions of: ADD/ADHD; Dyslexia; Teacher-child conflict; depression; and 'I'm Dumb Syndrome.'

Boys and girls learn differently!

Michael Gurian

Did you know that females see better in lower light and males better in brighter light? Or that the male brain is structured so that the fight or flight response is more rapidly engaged that the female brain? This book clearly demonstrates brain difference between the sexes and how this impacts on all aspects of learning. The author has drawn on current scientific knowledge and provides innovative ideas for educational reform that will allow all children to reach their full potential.

A mind at a time

Mel Levine

Different minds learn differently - and this book helps adults identify the learning style to best suit your child.  The author and this book were featured on an Oprah special about learning needs and differences amongst children.

Why motor skills matter: improve your child's physical development to enhance learning and self-esteem

Tara Losquadro Liddle with Laura Yorke

The author is a paediatric physical therapist, adding weight to her belief that motor skills form the basis of cognitive development.  A practical book, filled with age-appropriate activities.
