Friendships are vitally important at any age, but for children just beginning to explore relationships outside their family, they are even more so. These picture books explore friendships in different ways - some are about making up after a disagreement, others are about being friends no matter what.
The new dog
Barbara Shook Hazen; illustrated by R. W. Alley
Tootsie is the new dog in Danny's dog walking group - and he's quite excited, only the other dogs aren't too impressed. Tootsie is used to being pampered and that isn't how Danny works at all. All the dogs tease and bully Tootsie and Tootsie gets the blame. Eventually he has enough and runs away - and nabs a robber! In winning instant hero status Tootsie earns a place in the group - enough to help out a new new dog the next day.
