Doctors, hospital and the dentist

Going to the doctor, the dentist and hospital is quite scary - and that's just for adults!  For children, who have little knowledge of what's going on, it is even more intimidating.  These books all have reassuring messages about visiting various health professionals.

Russell Hoban; illustrated by Ian Andrew

Jim is in hospital and is seriously ill.  He is worried about surgery and not being able to return from his dreams.  Nurse Bami, from Africa, helps him imagine an animal who will find him and bring him back.  Jim's Finder is a lion, who gives him the strength to face surgery and recover.

Next please

Ernst Jandl and Norman Junge

This is a very simple book for younger children which shows a group of five toys waiting for their turn with the doctor behind the closed door.  Each time one of them is called it leaves behind the others to wait for the door to open and the repaired toy to return as good as new.

This book is particularly good for younger children as the text is very succinct and the images are simplistic yet appealing.

Recommended for ages 2 +.
