Colson collection

The Colson collection aims to be a representation of what children have read over the years. It supports research on literary or historical topics, and art and design. Items in this collection are either originals or facsimiles, some published at the very beginning of the development of children's literature.

This is a reference-only heritage collection that is located in Special Collections at Central City Library.

"The ‘Terrible Three’ were in the quadrangle after breakfast in the morning. At ‘brekker’ they had sensed that ‘something’ was up. Masters’ faces had been unusually grave: the prefects at the high table, who evidently knew what the ‘something’ was, showed as much in their looks: Baggy Trimble had heard Mr Linton mention to Mr Lathom that Railton was seeing the Head: Gore of the Shell had seen Railton coming away from the Head’s house with a face like, as he described it, a boiled owl: and there had been other rumours and whispers already."

From Cardew’s catch by Frank Richards (1954). Frank Richards was best known for his Billy Bunter books.

Reading delights: a select list of children's books

Compiled by Majorie Paul for Auckland Public Libraries

A list of fiction, poetry and folk tales based on a criterion "that is used for all good literature: has the author something worthwhile to say and has he said it well?" This booklist was produced to highlight the beginnings of the Colson collection, and a display of children's books, which were considered the best in children's literature.
