This award is presented every two years. Nominees are made from member countries who are part of the International Board on Books for Young people (IBBY), and an international jury chooses the winners.
The award is named after the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen who wrote some of the most loved stories of children from around the world. This award is the highest International recognition that an author and/or illustrator can receive.
