Charles Heaphy (1822 - 1881)
A founder of the Auckland Society of Arts, and winner of the Victoria Cross, Major Heaphy was also a surveyor and had previously assisted with the first geological survey of Auckland. In 1851 he produced a 75 cm by 119 cm "Plan of the Town of Auckland", which includes names of original Crown Grant purchasers. It is believed to have been commissioned by William Smellie Graham, landowner and merchant.
Recognising the importance of this plan, the original was eventually purchased by the New Zealand Insurance Company, and is currently housed in the Central Library. In 1984 they generously allowed Auckland City Libraries to create facsimile prints for sale, some of which are still available. The digital image is from a facsimile print. |
