Rodney and South Kaipara

Parts of the Rodney district are now some of the fastest growing suburban areas in Auckland, making the transition from farming and holiday baches.
This is a process that firstly Auckland and then North Shore, Waitakere and Manukau Cities have already gone through to some extent.

A detailed history covering the period 1876 to 1976. Well indexed, but no bibliography.


Bioletti, Harry.
Rodney: coast to coast: the story of the Rodney County Council, 1976 - 1989. (1992)

A well illustrated successor to the above, not as detailed, but with a bibliography.

 

Hahn, Malcolm.

“God willing and weather permitting“; the Upper Waitemata Harbour. (2007 revised edition).

Details the history of shipping in the upper harbour, including Hobsonville, Riverhead and Lucas and Hellyers Creeks, along with people and places.

 

Yarwood, Vaughan.
Between coasts, from Kaipara to Kawau. (2000)

A well illustrated history and description of different parts of the rural part of Rodney District.

Specifically concerned with the early days of the Hibiscus Coast, from Waiwera to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

Pioneering women of South Kaipara.  (2000)

Includes Kaukapakapa, Helensville, Woodhill, Riverhead, Kumeu, Huapai and Waimauku women, both pre and post 1900, and brief histories of local women's organisations. Well indexed.

Provides useful information and is well illustrated.

Well researched.

 

Mahurangi Harbour


Bioletti, Harry.
Warkworth roundabout, text and sketches. (1991)

Subtitled as "reminiscences of some of the older citizens of the Mahurangi area". Bioletti is the author of a number of other books on this area.

Locker, Ronald Harry.
Jade River: a history of the Mahurangi. (2001)

An excellent hstory of the Maori and Pakeha settlement of the harbour and surrounding area. It also has a great bibliography.

 

Northern Wairoa

A solid local history.


Fordyce, Stephen.
Longwater: historical aspects of the Northern Wairoa. (1998)

A recent contribution to the history of the greater Dargaville area.


Stallworthy, John.
Early Northern Wairoa. (1916)

Stallworthy was a local newspaper editor, timber workers' union official and MP for the Kaipara from 1905 to 1911.

 

Puhoi

Celebrates 100 years of the Puhoi Centennial Hall, and its impact on the local community.
