Parnell, Newmarket, Grafton and Remuera

Although physically quite close to each other, the three areas have distinct histories.

Bush, Graham W.A.
Decently and in order, the government of the City of Auckland 1840 - 1971, the centennial history of the Auckland City Council. (1971)

The Parnell Borough amalgamated with Auckland City in 1914, while the Remuera Road Board amalgamated in 1918. There is much of relevance in this superb history of local government activities. 

Advance in order, the Auckland City Council from centenary to reorganisation 1971 - 1989. (1991)

The Auckland Research Centre has the large index to the notes of both these works.

 

Early Parnell. (1998)

A 126 page collection of early photographs and maps giving a good pictorial overview of the Parnell area.


Holman, Dinah. Newmarket: lost and found. (2001)

The authoritative history of Newmarket.


50 YEARS; 1885-1935 Newmarket Borough Jubilee
(1935)

Includes a good description of the 1846 to 1850 period, and the first years of the Borough Council to 1900.


MacDonald, Winifred.
Recollections, a sketch history of early Remuera 1870 - 1914. (1982) and Recollections 1850 - 1920, a sketch history of early Remuera. (1984)

Although the 1984 edition updates the 1983 edition, the 1983 edition contains some different photographs. Originally published as articles in the Auckland - Waikato Historical Society Journal.

Newmarket, a brief 104 - year illustrated history commemorating the cessation of the Borough of Newmarket. (1989)

A good history of this small Borough. This updates a 1985 edition that had different photographs.


Wilkinson, Margaret, Osman, Isky and Barnicoat, Wallis.
Stories of Parnell. (1990)

A wide range of reminiscences, including people, buildings, schools, churches, transport and public events.
