Archives in the Auckland region

Regional authority records:

Auckland Harbour Board records are with the New Zealand National Maritime Museum, and the Auckland Regional Council has responsibility for records of a number of regional bodies. Records concerning bulk water supply are with Watercare, while domestic supply records are with the relevant local authority.

Beachlands County Town

Originally part of Manukau County, it was formed in 1954 and joined Manukau City in 1965.

Bucklands and Eastern Beaches County Town

Originally part of Manukau County, it was formed in 1954 and joined Manukau City in 1965.

East Tamaki Roads Board   

Formed in 1862 as the East Tamaki Highway Board, and dissolved in 1921.

Records only for 1876 - 1920


Howick Town District

Formed in 1865 as the Howick Highway Board, it became a Town District in 1921 and a Borough in 1952. It joined Manukau City in 1989.

Records only for 1930 - 1989.  


Mangere Bridge County Town  

Originally part of Manukau County, it was formed in 1954 and joined Manukau City in 1965.

Mangere East County Town

Originally part of Manukau City, it was formed in 1955 and joined Manukau City in 1965.

Manukau County  

There was briefly a Manukau County 1876 - 1878.   From 1878 there were only Road Boards in the area.   A new Manukau County was then created in 1912, which joined Manukau City in 1965.

Manurewa Road Board

Formed in 1867 as the Manurewa Highway Board, it became a Town District in 1916 and a Borough in 1937. It joined Manukau City in 1965.

Maraetai County Town

Originally part of Manukau County, it was formed in 1962 and joined Manukau City in 1965.

Maraetai Road Board

Formed as the Maraetai Highway Board in 1867 and dissolved in 1914.

Otara County Town

Originally part of Manukau County, it was formed and then joined Manukau City both in 1965.

Pakuranga County Town

Originally part of Manukau County, it was formed in 1956 and joined Manukau City in 1965.

Formed in 1863 as the Pakuranga Highway Board and dissolved in 1921.

Papakura Road Board

Formed in 1862 as the Papakura Highway Board and dissolved in 1918.

Formed in 1864 as the Paparoa Highway Board and dissolved in 1921.

Papatoetoe Road Board/City Council

Formed as the Papatoetoe Highway Board in 1865, it became a Town District in 1919, a Borough in 1946 and a City in 1965. It joined Manukau City in 1989.

Turanga Roads Board

Formed in 1865 as the Turanga Highway Board and dissolved in 1917.

Wairoa Roads Board

West Tamaki Roads Board

Only rate records, and just for 1891 - 1909. See the Auckland City Council for other records.


Wiri Drainage Board

Joined the Manukau City Council in 1965.

Archives held by the North Shore City Council:

Birkenhead City

Originally part of Waitemata County, Birkenhead Road Board was formed in 1884.   In 1888 it separated from Waitemata County and became a Borough, and later a City.  It joined North Shore City in 1989.

Devonport Borough

Originally part of Waitemata County, the Flagstaff Highway Board was formed in 1866.   In 1886 it separated from Waitemata County and became Devonport Borough.   It joined North Shore City in 1989.

Originally part of Waitemata County, the Borough was formed in 1954.   it joined North Shore City in 1989.

Northcote Borough

Originally part of Waitemata County, the Borough was formed in 1908.   It joined North Shore City in 1989.

Takapuna Borough

Originally part of Waitemata County, the Borough was formed in 1913.   It became a City in 1974 and joined North Shore City in 1989.

Note that Waitemata County included many parts of the North Shore at different times (see also Waitakere City).   It also covered parts of what is now Rodney District Council.

Records are available from the North Shore City Archives in Takapuna 9.30am - noon and 1pm -3.30pm Monday to Friday.   Record holdings do vary.

Glen Eden Borough

Originally part of Waitemata County, it was formed as the Glen Eden Town District in 1921, became a separate Borough in 1953 and joined Waitakere City in 1989.

Orignally part of Waitemata County, it was formed as the Henderson Town District in 1922, became a separate Borough in 1946 and joined Waitakere City in 1989.

New Lynn Borough

Originally part of Waitemata County, it was formed as the New Lynn Town District in 1910, became a separate Borough in 1929 and joined Waitakere City in 1989.

Formed in 1974 from the western part of the old Waitemata County, it joined Waitakere City in 1989.

Waitemata County

Formed in 1876, the western part became Waitemata City in 1974, while the Glenfield and Albany areas joined Takapuna City.   Waitemata County and City Engineers Department Plans 1910 - 1972 are at Archives New Zealand's Auckland office.

Records only for 1883 - 1974, and until the 1900s only minute books survive.


Rodney and Franklin Counties:

Waitakere City also holds Road Board Minute books for Wainui (includes Orewa) 1870 - 1892, Pukeatua (includes Dairy Flat) 1898 - 1915 and Kaukapakapa 1919 - 1921. These were originally part of Rodney County and later became part of Waitemata County. They are now covered by Rodney District Council.   Archives New Zealand's Auckland office also has Road Board Minutes, etc., for both the Rodney and Franklin District Council's areas, along with Pukekohe Borough Council subject files 1912  - 1983.
