Auckland City Council's records are held at Auckland City Council archives and date back to the early 1860s. These include:
City Board of Works (CBW), 1862-1863 City Board of Commissioners (CBC), 1863-1870 Auckland City Council (ACC), 1871-1989 Auckland Transition Committee (ATC) and 1988-1989 Auckland City (AKC). 1989-
Minutes of the above local bodies are partially indexed by the Bush Indices, compiled to assist Professor Bush when writing his histories of the Auckland City Council to 1989. The Indices can be accessed in the Auckland Research Centre of the Central City Library. The council Archives holds minute books along with many other records, including valuation rolls, correspondence, and building details.
All the local bodies listed below were eventually absorbed into the Auckland City Council. Some began life as Highway or Road Boards, and later became Boroughs. For many of these, there are either partial or complete indices to their minutes held in the Archives. Also, many local bodies have published official histories which list Mayors and often Councilors and may assist with dates.
Arch Hill Highway Board (AHB - holdings just 1877-1916) Formed in 1871, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1913.
Avondale Borough Council (AVB - holdings just 1891-1927) Formed in 1868 as the Whau Highway Board, it became the Avondale Road Board from 1882, then Avondale Borough from 1922, and amalgamated with Auckland City in 1927.
Eden Terrace Road Board (ETB - holdings just 1885-1914) Formed in 1875, it was previously part of the Mount Albert Highway Board, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1915.
Ellerslie Borough Council (ELB - holdings 1908-1989) Formed in 1908 as the Ellerslie Town District, it became a Borough in 1938.
Epsom Highway District / Road Board and Domain Board (EPB - holdings 1879-1919) Formed in 1879, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1917.
Grey Lynn Borough Council (GLB - holdings just 1883-1917) It was formed in 1868 as the Newton Highway Board, became Newton Borough in 1885, was renamed Grey Lynn Borough in 1899, and amalgamated with Auckland City in 1914.
Karangahape Highway Board (KHB - holdings just 1876-1883) Formed in 1868, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1882.
Mount Albert City Council (MAC - holdings 1866-1989) Formed as the Mount Albert Highway Board in 1866, it became the Mount Albert Borough in 1911, and Mount Albert City in 1978.
Mount Eden Borough Council (MEB - holdings 1868-1989) Formed as the Mount Eden Highway Board in 1867, it became the Mount Eden Borough in 1906.
Mount Roskill Borough Council (MRB - holdings 1868-1989) Formed as the Mount Roskill Highway Board in 1867, it became the Mount Roskill Borough in 1947.
Mount Wellington Borough Council (MWB - holdings 1863-1985) Formed as the Panmure Highway Board in 1863, it was changed in 1865 to the Mount Wellington Highway Board, excluding Panmure but including Ellerslie. The Ellerslie Town District separated off in 1908, and the Board became the Mount Wellington Borough in 1952. It incorporated Panmure Township in 1955, and amalgamated with Otahuhu Borough to form Tamaki City in 1986. There are no separate records for Panmure Township (1868 - 1955).
Newmarket Borough Council (NMB - holdings just 1885-1989) Formed as the Newmarket Highway Board in 1868, it became the Newmarket Borough in 1885.
Onehunga Borough Council (OHB - holdings 1868-1989) Formed as the Onehunga Highway Board in 1868, it became the Onehunga Borough in 1877.
Orakei Road Board (ORB - holdings 1900-1928) Formed in 1900 from part of the Remuera Road Board area, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1928.
Otahuhu Borough Council (OTB - holdings 1865-1985) Formed as the Otahuhu Highway Board in 1865, it became Otahuhu Borough in 1912. It amalgamated with Mount Wellington Borough to form Tamaki City in 1986.
One Tree Hill Borough Council (OTH - holdings just 1879-1989) Formed as the One Tree Hill Highway Board in 1863, it became the One Tree Hill Borough in 1930.
Parnell Borough Council (PBC - holdings just 1882-1914) Formed as the Parnell Highway Board in 1863, it became the Parnell Borough in 1877. It amalgamated with Auckland City in 1913.
Point Chevalier Road Board (PCB - holdings just 1911-1922) Formed as the Point Chevalier Highway Board in 1874, it was previously part of the Arch Hill Highway Board area. It amalgamated with Auckland City in 1921.
Ponsonby Highway District Board (PHB - holdings just 1870-1883) Formed in 1868 as the Dedwood Highway Board, it was the Ponsonby Highway Board from 1873. It amalgamated with Auckland City in 1882.
Remuera Road Board (RRB - holdings just 1897-1918) Formed in 1863, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1915.
Tamaki City Council (TCC - holdings 1985-1989) Formed in 1986, with the amalgamation of the Mount Wellington and Otahuhu Borough Councils.
(West) Tamaki Road Board (TRB - holdings just 1914-1928) Formed in 1862, it amalgamated with Auckland City in 1928. Records for 1862 to 1884 are at the Auckland War Memorial Museum Library, while rate records (1891 to 1909) are at the Manukau City Council.
Waiheke County (Holdings just 1921-1984) The Orapiu and Ostend Road Boards were both formed in 1921. Ostend was enlarged and renamed Western Waiheke in 1946, and in 1955 Orapiu and Western Waiheke became the Waiheke Road Board. The County of Waiheke was formed in 1970 and amalgamated with Auckland City in 1989.

Auckland Metropolitan Planning Organisation (Holdings 1943-1953) Formally constituted in 1946, and replaced by the Auckland Regional Planning Authority in 1954.
Auckland Suburban Local Bodies Association (Holdings just 1942-1988) Formed around 1922.
Manukau Water Supply Board (Holdings just 1896-1932) Formed in 1891 by the Epsom and One Tree Hill Road Boards.
