Website search tips

Try the tips below for effectively searching our website.

Please note that our website search only includes the pages of our site and does not include the catalogue, or our databases, which need to be searched separately.

1. Enter words or phrases that are likely to be found only in the information you want to find. The more words you enter, the more specific your search will be.

2. When searching multiple words, the search engine defaults to an AND operator.  This means that if you search for the words book reviews, you will find pages containing both the words book and reviews.

3. Use double quotes to search for a phrase. For example, type “book reviews“  to find pages with the phrase book reviews. This means the words book reviews will appear together as a phrase in the page. Without the double quotes, this query would use the default AND operator instead of the phrase.

4. Look for words that are close to each other by using the NEAR operator. When you use NEAR, the closer together the words are, the higher the rank of the page, so the higher it appears in the list of search results. For example - type book NEAR reviews to find pages where the word book is within 50 words of the word review.

5. Look for synonyms or similar words by using the OR operator. For example - type city OR region to find the word city or the word region, but not necessarily both.

6. Limit your search by using the AND NOT operator to exclude words. For example - type city AND NOT region to find all instances of city, as long as city is not followed by the word region

7. Look for words that begin with the same letters by using a single asterisk (*). For example - type develop* to find develop, developed, developing, development and so on.

8. Look for all forms of a word by using a double asterisk (**). For example - type fly** to match fly, flew, flown.
