Research guides

This section is located in the music area of the Learning and Recreation Unit (Ground Floor) of the Central City Library and consists of resources useful to help with music research.

This resource helps the researcher explore the wealth of literature on music. It consists of a series of essays describing and evaluating the literature on a wide variety of topics and composers. It covers jazz and popular music and also ethnic music by geographic area.

This resource is intended for any research purpose imaginable and is very comprehensive. It has citations for virtually all of the world's performers, groups, journalists, critics and specialist writers. Covering all styles and genres of music The music index cites book reviews, obituaries, new periodicals and news and articles about music, musicians and the music industry.

This useful gem cites and describes the literature that analyses specific works of music. Each entry is annotated to indicate to the reader the level and nature of the analysis cited. It accesses books, theses, dissertations and periodical literature to give a range of resources and levels of approaches to suit the amateur, undergraduate and professional alike.

This is a catalogue that exhaustively lists the works of 132 major composers, breaking down works to put a smaller piece, aria or movement in the context of a larger work. Organised by composer, each entry consists of the title of the work, the date of composition (or first performance/publication), the source of the lyrics, instrumentation, provenance, and its opus or catalog number. The main focus of the catalog covers the works of Bach and Handel to Schoenberg and Weberg. The Baroque is also well presented to give a nicely rounded approach.
