Tennis
Professional tennis is played all year round across the world. The male circuit is called the ATP Tour, the female circuit the WTA Tour. There are four Grand Slam tournaments played every year at world renowned venues:
First on the circuit is the Australian Open held in late January. It is played on a hard court rebound ace surface, as are New Zealand's premier tennis competitions - the ASB Classic (womens) and the Heineken Open (mens). These tournaments are played in Auckland immediately preceeding the Australian Open.
The French Open held in late May is played on the clay courts of Stade Roland Garros in Paris and favours the hard hitting baseline specialists.
Wimbledon begins in late June, the only Open played on grass. It is also the oldest of the four tournaments, 4 years older than the US Open. The grass courts favour serve and volley players.
The US Open is held in September on the hard courts of Flushing Meadow, New York.
