Rugby league was launched in New Zealand and Australia in 1908. Rugby league evolved from rugby union when the question of payment for lost time became an issue. Rugby league was the professional game with players paid for playing whereas rugby union was an amateur game and players were not paid to play. The wheel has now turned full circle with rugby union now also a professional game.
