Netball

Netball is the predominant women's team sport in New Zealand. It is extremely popular in Commonwealth countries including Australia, South Africa, Jamaica and the UK.


Some fun facts:

  • The first game of netball was played in England in 1892 on grass with goals made from clothes props and paper bags.

  • The netball goal is 3.05 metres (10 feet) high.

  • The Netball World Cup was first held in 1963 in Eastbourne, England and won by Australia.

  • New Zealand has won the World Cup three times, in 1967, 1987 and 2003.

  • In the 1979 Netball World Cup New Zealand, Australia and Jamaica all tied for first place.

  • The next World Cup will be held in 2007 in New Zealand at the Trusts Stadium, Waitakere, Auckland.
