Local government elections

Elections for local government occur every 3 years.  The next elections are in September to October 2007.  These are postal elections, and voting occurs to elect:

  • your local councillors and mayor and community board members
  • your regional councillors
  • members of your district health board (DHB)
  • licensing trust members

Information on your local council elections can be found on council pages by using the links above. You may also find information there about voting for your district health board members, but if not, visit the Ministry of Health's pages on DHBs.

An important difference to note between council elections in Auckland and DHB elections is that the local and regional councils use the First Past the Post (FPP) voting system, and the DHBs use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) voting system.  All of the websites above provide a way to learn about how the STV voting system works.
