Auckland War Memorial Museum Library

One of the major research libraries in the country with outstanding collections relating to Auckland, New Zealand and the Pacific: rare books/manuscripts/archives/maps…

Collection highlights include:

  • Te Kakano - Maori and Pacific Island resource centre
  • The Armoury - The museum's military information centre.  Includes Cenotaph database and Holocaust Gallery
  • Pictorial Collections - One of the most outstanding collections of Pacific/ Polynesian photographs in the world

Historic Auckland

Website of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust/Pouhere Taonga.  Historic architecture and heritage sites online.


New Zealand Film Archive/Ngā Kaitiaki o ngā Taonga Whitiāhua (Auckland Office)

Repository of NZ’s moving image heritage: documentaries/newsreels etc. Reference library and onsite viewing and research facilities are available.

A vast repository of New Zealand historical documents and government records. Many items now available online.


Department of Internal Affairs/Te Tari Taiwhenua

Online access to the original 50 volume history of New Zealand in the Second World War.  Covers all aspects of New Zealand’s involvement:

political background/events/campaigns/ battalions/individual soldiers...


Hocken Collections/Uare Taoka o Hakena

Part of the University of Otago Library, this is one of the foremost historical research collections in New Zealand.


National Library of New Zealand/Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa

Extensive collections of New Zealand and Pacific material. Includes the rich historical resources of the Alexander Turnbull Library. The site gives access to a range of useful online exhibitions and resources. Highlights include:

  • Timeframes: Heritage images available online
  • Niupepa: Early Maori newspapers online (1842-1932). English abstracts.
  • Papers Past: Historic19th century newspapers online
