Biographies

Dictionary of New Zealand biography/Ngā Tāngata Taumata Rau

Online biographies of New Zealanders from all walks of life. Text is available in both English and Te Reo. Use the advanced search option to search for lists of biographies in specific categories: occupations, regions, dates.  Biographies are posthumous only - living people are not included.

The dictionary of New Zealand biography is also available in a range of different printed formats.

Papers past

The National Library's online collection of over 750,000 pages of historic 19th century New Zealand newspapers.

Niupepa

Early Māori newpapers online (1842-1932).  Includes some English content.

Times Digital Archive

(needs a library barcode and PIN number)

Fully searchable digital archive of The Times (London) from 1785-1985.  A British newspaper but includes coverage of key New Zealand events from early European settlement onwards.

Other key sources include the the Central Library's Auckland Research Centre.  Check out their list of newspapers permanently held - highlights include the New Zealand Herald available on microfilm from 1863 on.

Find a newspaper in the National Library's extensive print and microfilm collections. Search for available titles in the library catalogue, order copies of articles or purchase copies of microfilms online.
