Medieval history

What were the Middle Ages?

The Middle Ages were a fascinating time - and a period of great change in the world.

Medieval history covers the reign of Charlemagne and the growth (and fall) of the Holy Roman Empire, Viking raids and exploration, and the birth and expansion of Islam in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Spain.

Then comes the Norman Conquest, the Domesday Book, early Crusades and the signing of the Magna Carta in England. It saw the growth of education, and the building of universities and magnificent stone cathedrals and castles across England and Europe.

The Late Middle Ages cover the Black Death, the Hundred Years War, the Peasant's Revolt and other unpleasant events.
