“History takes time.... History makes memory." Gertrude Stein This webpage contains links to resources relating to ancient history and world history. Use the headings to the left to view these pages. Material is largely organised by continent, although some significant periods have been highlighted. Books, periodicals and links cover everything from politics, religion, warfare, classical literature, the arts, philosophy, architecture to archaeology and myths and legends. World History records humanity's past. It attempts to explain our cultures and societies, enveloping most aspects of human activity and behaviour. Politics and religion, the arts and sciences, technology and economics, beliefs and social attitudes are just some of the topics encompassed by history. Ancient History is defined as "the history of the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean area and Near East before the fall of the Western Empire in 476". [The Oxford encyclopedic English dictionary]. This definition may be limiting because ancient history is continually being reshaped and re-interpreted through the discoveries made during ongoing archaeological excavations of ancient sites and manuscript research.
