Shakespeare was more than just a playwright – as a young man he also wrote 154 sonnets.
These sonnets were published in 1609, and since this date, controversy has surrounded them as scholars have sought to identify the "fair youth" addressed in the first 126 sonnets, the "dark lady" addressed in the following 28 (or 26) sonnets, and the "rival poet" also referred to in the "fair youth" poems.
