Apart from Kohanga Reo, which are discussed under Māori education, there are two major organisations of early childhood education in New Zealand: Playcentre and Kindergarten. There are also a large number of independent early childhood education providers. This Ministry of Education site contains a spreadsheet that includes contact details for early childhood education institutions. You will need Microsoft Excel to view it.

Library storytimes create an atmosphere for children to enjoy the magic of books and offer a chance to develop singing and socialisation skills. Most storytime sessions are attended by children under school age, but some weekend and special storytimes also cater to older children.
Libraries contain a number of resources to help early learners. These include:
- wonderful picture books for adults and children to share together.
- jigsaw puzzles to help development of hand-eye and spatial coordination, which assist in the later development of reading and writing.
- the children's easy-to-read collection (which have JE on their spine label). These are books from series with restricted vocabularies, specifically designed to make learning to read easy and successful. A great tool for parents wishing to support their children on their path to reading.
We also have a comprehensive collection of CD ROMs for preschoolers. |
