The Source quiz

Want to practise your database search skills?

Find the answers to questions in this quiz by searching The Source

1. Use The Source to find a novel, a poem and a short story on the theme of revenge.

  • Search for a novel by using the books and authors subject search. Identify a novel suitable for teens and use the catalogue to determine availability.

You can limit your search by using the age criteria 13 to Adult. Use the feature ‘Add to list maker’ in the top right hand corner of the “details” page to record the books you are interested in.

  • Click on details for the Meg Cabot novel Love you to death. This title was originally published in the U.S. using an author pseudonym AND a different title. What is the alternative title?

  • Use the same subject search in Poetry and Poets to identify a poem about revenge. Many of these include the full text but choose one poem and scroll to the end to find which anthologies include it.

  • Do the same under Short Stories and find some stories where the full text is available. Add to list maker.

  • Go to List maker and display the books and stories you have chosen.

2. Use the Awards search to find out which awards have been won by New Zealand author/illustrator Gavin Bishop.

What was his most recent award?

3. Go back to the Books and Authors search to find more information about Gavin Bishop.

Follow the link to his website for biographical information and find out where he first went to school and what occupation he had before becoming a fulltime author/ illustrator.

Note:

There is also a Biography link but for many authors the only biographical information is found by linking to the author’s own website.

4. Support Material contains PDFs- Teacher’s notes on specific books and thematic units of work.

Have a look at this page just to see what is there. It is mainly of interest to teachers.
