Hint: Choose the Geography & cultures search from the homepage. From the Cultures drop down list choose ‘Mayas’. Check out the ‘culture overview’ article
2. Find an overview of the Vietnam War
Hint: In the History search box select ‘all’ from the topic list, enter keywords ‘Vietnam war’. Narrow the search by choosing an ‘event overview’ document type.
3. Find names and biographical information of three female Canadian poets
Hint: Click the Author search button within the Literature search. Choose ‘biographies only’. Fill in the ‘nationality’, ‘gender’, and ‘genre’ fields.
4. What genre of literature did the Restoration period excel in?
Hint: Click the Literary Eras button within the Literature search. Select ‘Restoration Literature’ from the list of links. As well as informing us that the Restoration period excelled, above all, in drama, the essay provides the major authors and titles from the period.
5. Find a New York Times article reporting on an interview with Britney Spears in 2003
Hint: In the Person search enter ‘Britney Spears’ in the name field and choose ‘all results’. Click the ‘Newspapers’ tab at the top of the result list to view the article citations.
6. Can you find any biographical information about a Russian ballet dancer?
Hint: In the Person search choose ‘ballet dancer’ from the list of occupations and fill in the nationality field.
7. Did genetic engineering become possible in the 1930s, 1950s, or 1970s? What was the scientific discovery that led to this?
Hint: In the Science & Health search choose the ‘Science’ topic and enter the keywords ‘genetic engineering’. Choose an encyclopedia topic overview to find the answers.
8. What does the flag of Cuba look like?
Hint: in the Multimedia Gallery search enter the search term ‘Cuba’ and select the Maps, flags & seals option. Or, from the homepage do a Keyword search with the search term 'flag Cuba', then click on the Multimedia tab above the list of results.
9. Find out everything you can about the stock market crash of 1929
Hint: Try an Advanced search using search terms 'wall street', 'stock market crash', '1929'. Experiment with searching terms as keyword, full-text and subject, and using Boolean search terms 'AND' and 'OR' and compare the results.
