A standard is a published document that sets out the minimum requirements necessary to ensure that a material, structure, product, method, or system will do the job it is intended to do.
Standards can be on practically any subject you can think of, from any aspect of construction to the safety of toys.
There is even a standard containing guidelines for writing standards and believe it or not there are old British standards on making tea and determining if your toast is burnt!

Search tips
If you know which standard you need:
Try a 'Title' search in the catalogue using the prefix and numbers, eg. NZS 3604 If you don't know the standard number, try a 'Keyword' search.
If you don't have a standard name or number:
Locate a standard in the online database. View standards online or search the library catalogue once you have located the standard number.
Note: some of the older standards in our collection may not be in the library catalogue.
If you can not find the standard you are looking for email the standards librarian for help.

Related resources
You may also find it helpful to look at related law resources such as Acts (or Statutes) and regulations. For example, the New Zealand standard NZS 3604 Timber Framed Buildings could be used in conjunction with The Building Act 1991 and The Building Amendment Regulations 2003.
