Painting is an international language. Throughout the history of art, painting has served a wide range of functions from social or religious to simply decorative. Before the invention of the camera a key function was to depict reality.
More recently, artists have exploited the medium to express the whole gamut of human emotions. Painting was at the forefront of the avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century, reflecting a radically changing world view. Artists such as Kandinsky and Picasso challenged the accepted boundaries and meaning of art, beginning a process which gained momentum throughout the century. And today, it seems, anything goes…
