Remaining mobile and independent may become more of a challenge as we age, but fortunately there are products and services to assist us.

Websites

AA New Zealand:  AA provides special driving lessons for older drivers.

Accessable New Zealand: This site has ideas and links to keep you living safely and independently.

Agewell:  This site gives some practical information on how to meet the challenges of transport and mobility as you get older.

Bus, train and ferry travel:  Older people who hold Senior Citizen's ID cards are entitled to travel for reduced fares on buses (Stagecoach and Howick/Eastern) trains and ferries (some time restrictions apply).

Cars and driving: This link to Auckland City Libraries' car and driving page which provides access to the Road Test Index and other great resources.

Citizens Advice Bureau:  Try this wonderful organization for information on transportation options.

Consumer (NZ): This site offers consumer information on cars, scooters, fuel, vehicle insurance and much more! 

Grey Power: This organization may also be able to provide information on getting around.

Heartland Services:  This is self-described as a “one-stop-shop from which the rural population may access a range of government and perhaps other related programs and services“ including information about getting around.

Land Transport NZ: LTSA also has information on disabilities and driving, including scooters and mobility chairs.

Mapquest:  This site offers maps to your city, your country and beyond!

Ministry of Transport: This site outlines licensing issues for older drivers.

Mobility Parking Permit Scheme:  This is an officially recognised concession-parking scheme which permits people with special needs to park as close to their destination as possible.

NZ Taxi Federation:  This site will help you locate NZ Taxi Federation approved service providers throughout New Zealand. It also indicates which providers offer special needs (Total Mobility and wheelchair hoist) services.

Neighbourhood support: Try your local neighbourhood support to see if there are drivers in your area who are willing to help you with your transportation needs.

New Zealand Road Code: The road code is available online now.

Office for Senior Citizens: Provides tips on getting around when you stop driving.

Safe with Age: Through Age Concern in some areas, Safe with Age driving seminars are given in.  Call your local Age Concern Council office for details.

Total Mobility Scheme:  Some regional councils offer their residents with special needs, transport assistance or help with associated transport costs. Find out more here!

UBD Online: This online directory lists over 150,000 companies in New Zealand. This particular link to UBD lists mobility products and services.

Volunteer Transport Schemes - Age Concern: Through Age Concern, volunteers drive older people who require transport to doctors' and other appointments or to local activities or groups for older people.  Click on the link provided, select contact Age Concern and then your geographic location, to find out what is available in your area.

Weka: This site provides practical information on transport and mobility for the older person and people with disabilities.

Wises: This site will give you directions to locations throughout New Zealand.
