Library resources, services and events

The library offers a number of resources, services and events for older people.


Large text library website

Font size buttons. You can enlarge the size of the text on most Auckland City Library webpages by repeatedly clicking on the large 'A' next to the small 'A' option found near the top left hand corner of the page.

Alternatively, if you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, press the control (Ctrl) key on your keyboard and simultaneously scroll forward or backward using the mouse wheel in order to increase or decrease the font size.

Discounts

Auckland City Libraries members aged 65 years and over receive a 20% discount on the rental fee of most chargeable collections. The discount applies to:

  • DVDs and videos
  • Audio books
  • Music CDs 
  • Language courses
  • CD-ROMs

What's new which may be of particular interest to older people?

We have topical nonfiction for seniors and fiction featuring older people. Look now!


Large print collection

The library has a wide range of large print books.  When searching the catalogue, use the advanced search option to enter author, title or subject information and limit material type to large print to select 'large print books'. Check out our new large print titles.


Audio books

If you prefer to listen rather than read, the library has many books on cassette tape and compact disc. When searching the catalogue, use the advanced search option to enter author, title or subject information and limit material type to audio CD or audio tape. Visit the read and relax pages to find out what's new in audiobooks.

If you have a disability which means that you cannot read from our print collections but you can listen to audio books you may qualify for access personal membership and be exempt from fees and charges.  Visit the membership page for more information.

Accessible environment

The library has book trolleys to make it easier to get around when choosing your books.  Libraries also have seating to suit different preferences and a wheelchair is available at the Central Library (Ground Floor).

Computers at the library

The library has public computer workstations with Internet and Microsoft Office Suite, e.g., Word, Excel, etc available free of charge.  All libraries have workstations with large print keyboards and a large key keyboard and trackball mouse are available upon request. Please ask library staff.

Click and Learn Classes

Some libraries offer Click and Learn classes on subjects such as digital photography, basic computer skills, Trade me online auction, searching the library's catalogue, emailing, etc.

Described, captioned and foreign language movies on DVD

The library has DVDs, which have captions on them for those people who are hearing impaired.These may be searched in the library's catalogue by choosing Subject from the drop down menu and then typing in, video recordings for the hearing impaired.

Described DVDs have an audio description of the action in the movie, during scenes when there is no dialogue. These are suitable for those with low or no vision. These may be searched in the library's catalogue by choosing Subject from the drop down menu and then typing in, video recordings for people with visual disabilities.

Most DVDs have subtitles in various languages.

Library to you service

Can't get to the library because of an illness, temporary or permanent disability, or mobility difficulty?   Ask about our free “Library to you” service in which the library assists you in selecting items or chooses them for you and arranges their delivery and return.
