Community languages at Auckland City Libraries
To reflect the many different cultures in our city, Auckland City Libraries hold collections of books in many languages. A combination of census and collection data was used to help identify where the collections would be best based.
Collections are now more easily accessible by those in the community, both adults and children, who speak these languages. Donations are welcomed.
The Indic languages collection is based at Mt Albert Community Library. This collection includes books written in Bengali, Gujarati and Hindi and a new collection of Urdu books. Tamil books are held at Mt Roskill Library and the Panjabi collection is now at Otahuhu Community Library.
A European language collection consisting of French, German, Italian and Spanish is based at Leys Institute (Ponsonby) Community Library. We have had generous donations from Adiflor in France and Auckland Accueil in New Zealand.
The Panjabi and Vietnamese language collections are at Otahuhu Community Library.
The Arabic, Persian/Farsi and Tamil language collections are based at Mt Roskill Community Library.
A collection of Pacific Island languages is based at Glen Innes Community Library.
Auckland City Libraries currently have a floating Chinese language collection at the Central City Library and most community libraries.
The languages based at the Central City Library are Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese (also at St. Heliers Community Library), Korean, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Spanish, Tagalog and Thai.
Auckland City Libraries will continue to build these language collections with the aim being to support Auckland City’s ethnic communities and celebrate cultural diversity.
