North Shore newspapers to 1924

The first identifiable local newspaper including the North Shore area was the Waitemata Messenger, published at least between June and December 1885. It was a weekly and was published by a G.E. Alderton and a Mr Sibbin.

The next identifiable newspaper is the Waitemata Post, published at least from 19 May 1910 to 2 April 1914. There was also a separate Waitemata Times, a weekly published at least around 1912 and 1913 by W. Clement Cargill, according to Cleave's Auckland Directory. The Waitemata Post became the Waitemata News from 9 April 1914 to at least 15 March 1917, and was published by T. Lake, R.A. Bodle, and then a Mr Tozer and a Mr Poulson. The same publishers also produced the Manukau News at least from 15 May 1914 to 13 April 1916, which included news of the North Shore.

Tom Walsh's An illustrated story of Devonport and the old North Shore from 1841 to 1924..." (1924) refers to the quarto sized The News which circulated in Birkenhead and Northcote, and published by College and Co (p28). This was continued by the County Standard, which circulated in Birkenhead, Northcote, Devonport and Takapuna and was published by J. Gilbert, apparently from 1913 to 1916. Walsh also refers to the Victoria Mirror, a weekly published by J.C. Blomfield from 1912 to 1914. None of these three titles are listed in Cleave's Auckland Directory for that period.

From 3 November 1921 the Devonport Gazette and greater North Shore Advocate became the major North Shore local newspaper, and from 13 November 1924 it was renamed the North Shore Gazette.
