Cottrell, Nada. A history and bibliography of Motutapu and Rangitoto Islands. (1986).
A well-researched history of Maori and early Paheka settlement of the two islands. Includes a detailed bibliography.

Day, Dixie. Waiheke pioneers. (1989).
Historical profiles of Waiheke families, organised according to the Bay or area in which they live or lived.

Ingham, Gordon. A short history of Waiheke and Who's Who 950 AD - 1952  A brief historical overview, and a who's who of the islanders in 1952.

Kawau Island Historic Reserve, Department of Conservation. (1998). 
A brief but well illustrated history.

Luff, Helen Jordan. Tales from Great Barrier Island. (2003).

This mixture of research and interviews provides an interesting history of the island.

Maddock, Shirley. Islands of the gulf. (1983).
Includes some historical material on islands in the Hauraki Gulf.

Medland, Grace M. Great Barrier calls, an informative, authentic narrative, written by one of the pioneers born on Great Barrier Island. (1969)
A personal but interesting history.

Monin, Paul. Waiheke Island: a history. (1992).
A well-researched history of Maori and Pakeha settlement of the island, to 1920.

O'Brien, Cathy.  A selective annotated bibliography on personal accounts of life on Waiheke Island 1900 to 2000.  (2001).

Includes both primary and secondary sources.

Whyle, Ivan. Rakino Island. ( 1990).
A brief history.

Prior to Auckland City 1989 -, and Waiheke County 1970 - 1989, the area was served by the Orapiu Road Board 1921 - 1955, the Ostend Road Board 1921 - 1947, the Western Waiheke Road Board 1947 - 1955 and the Waiheke Road Board 1955 - 1970.   These records are held at the Auckland City Council Archives
