Maungakiekie and Onehunga

This includes the former Fencible settlement and port of Onehunga, along with the more recently settled One Tree Hill and Ellerslie districts.

Fox, Aileen.
Maungakiekie: the Maori pa on One Tree Hill. 2nd ed. (1984)

Brief details on the Maori occupation of One Tree Hill.

In the shadow of Maungakiekie: a history of One Tree Hill and its environs from pre-Maori times to 1989.
(1989)

A good history of the One Tree Hill area.

Mitchell, G.G.M.
The Blockhouse of Onehunga (1965)
The Penrose farm story. (1959)
Onehunga, 120 years progress: 1843 - 1963 (1963)

Written by the doyenne of Onehunga history, his resource material and papers are available in Special Collections at Auckland City Libraries.

Mogford, Janice C.
Onehunga: a brief history (1977) and The Onehunga heritage (1989)

The latter is especially good.

Tyler, Yvonne.
Borough of Ellerslie (1961)

Better titled 'The early history of the Borough of Ellerslie, from 1848 - 1949'.

Untold stories of Onehunga. (1993)

Unfortunately this 1993 book lacks both an index and a contents page.   Volume Two (2004) includes both, but just for that volume. Nevertheless both are worth browsing through.

Wynyard, Montague Harrison.
The history of One Tree Hill: the volcanic mountain known to the Maori people as Maungakiekie. (1903)
The story of Maungakiekie, the ancient Maori fortress and now One Tree Hill. (1958)

Focuses on the Maori history of the area and the influence of Sir John Logan Campbell. The second book updates the first.
