Scottish births, deaths and marriages

Auckland City Libraries has a growing collection of Scottish family history resources.

We are always open to suggestions for purchase. If you know of a resource that you think the library should have, complete our suggest a purchase form.

Below are some starting points for researching Scottish family history.

General Register of Births Deaths and Marriages

This is housed at New Register House, Edinburgh, and dates from 1 January, 1855.

Scotlands' People

This is the official Governmental source of genealogical data for Scotland. It is a "pay as you view" database of indexes from the genealogical records of the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS). It include Statutory Registers of births and marriages 1855-1899 and Statutory Registers of deaths -1855-1924. One additional year of births/deaths/marriage index data is added per annum. The restriction to data over 100 years old is GRO policy, to protect the privacy of living persons.

Old Parochial Registers. Pre 1855 (Presbyterian only)

The records of some 900 parishes were kept by their Presbyterian ministers, and most date from about 1740. Christenings and marriages only. We have the index to these Registers on microfiche at the shelf number 4 SCT BDM.

International Genealogical Index

Search this index for baptism and marriage records. This is part of FamilySearch. The library has this on microfiche, CD Rom and through the Internet.

Vital Records Index British Isles (CD ROM)

This index contains 5 million births, christenings and marriages taken from a partial collection of records in the British Isles dating from 1538-1888. This includes Scotland.
