These two denominationally based cemeteries are in Birkenhead Avenue, opposite Pupuke Road, and were proclaimed after Mount Victoria in Devonport, but before Glenfield and O'Neill's Point.
Birkenhead
Proclaimed in 1861, the catholic cemetery had at least two burials before 1869, while the catholic section of Mount Victoria wasn't used for burials until after 1869. According to St. Patrick's Catholic Church records Mariana Tupaea, an 18 year old from Hokianga, was buried in the "North Shore cemetery" on 24 December 1863. Also, Agatha Parinui, a 9 year old child of Petera Parinui and Margarita Teoto of North Shore, was buried in the "North Shore cemetery" on 9 March 1865.
There are no further listings for any catholic burials here until the existing burial records for the catholic cemetery start in 1898 - see the New Zealand Society of Genealogists' cemetery records. The cemetery is still open for some burials.
Northcote
Proclaimed in 1865, the Northcote anglican cemetery was the original name for what is now the Birkenhead anglican cemetery. From 1860 to 1913 the only local anglican church was St. John the Baptist's in Northcote. The anglican cemetery records date from 1882 - see the New Zealand Society of Genealogists' cemetery records.
