Regular free sessions of the Active Movement programme have begun at Auckland City Libraries.

This Sport and Recreation NZ (SPARC) initiative aims to provide positive movement experiences for preschoolers, to stimulate development of both brain and the body.

Nine community libraries and Central City Library are working with Sport Auckland to provide the programme across the city.

“Movement is a child’s first language, so it is important to provide babies with whole body movement right from birth” says Active Movement Advisor Alissa Hills.

Parents and caregivers are invited to take part in these regular free sessions at their local library, where they will also learn skills to put into practice at home.

“Each session will guide them through different body movements so they can learn how to provide similar experiences for their baby,” says Alissa.

While the activities are mainly for babies up to two years old, older pre-schoolers are also welcome to attend and benefit from Active Movement sessions.

Additional libraries are expected to join in holding sessions as Active Movement becomes more established.
