real history

The concept of real was developed as a response to sweeping changes in consumer perception towards food and how it impacts their health, well-being and quality of life.

The past several years have seen a radical shift in the public’s attitude towards food, with a vastly more informed and critical market. Eating out, in particular convenience eating, has become an everyday part of our lifestyles.

However, consumers’ informed awareness of the vital importance of eating healthy, natural, nutritious and high quality food is having a profound impact on all food and beverage providers, both here and internationally.

Today everyone wants health, taste and quality, without compromise, in what they eat and drink – but at realistic, accessible prices.

Currently real operates two outlets - a standalone café in central Takapuna and a specialist in-house café operating within the Les Mills World of Fitness in the Auckland CBD. The appeal of real’s distinctive product and service offering has been very well received by a broad range of customers and particularly amongst the local business community.

real's background

In 2003, after little more than six months trading, real won the NZ Herald ‘Viva’ Award for Best Healthy Takeouts in Auckland and was also the overall winner of the Ultimate Gourmet Takeout Award for Auckland.

Only a few months later, real was also successful in winning the prestigious New Zealand Retailer’s Association ‘Top Shop’ award for Best New Start-up Business 2003.

The following year, real was one of three finalists for the 2004 Top Shop Award in the highly competitive Specialist Food and Beverage category.
