Coming home - a new discovery tool

11 November 2008 was the 90th anniversary of signing of the Armistice that ended First World War. This year, New Zealand is commemorating the 'Coming Home' of our soldiers from the Great War. Many galleries, libraries, archives and museums (aka GLAMs) have contributed thousands of digital objects from their collections on the theme of 'coming home' so that you can find content and create your own video.

Coming Home is a Digital New Zealand initiative, coordinated by the National Library of New Zealand, to which Auckalnd City Libraries has contributed several thousand images from our heritage collections.

A search widget has been created where you can search on any topic relating to the 90 years since WW1 ended - a blank searchbox always makes me pause - help! I thought I'll search for Spanish flu as my great-uncle Russell MacMahon died aged 31 of this in the Trentham army camp after WWI ended: nil results for Spanish flu! a search for influenza yielded better results. It's a pity you can't tag or comment on the images about "Spanish flu".

It's best to search on something more general such as Auckland soldiers - there you can see lots of images of soldiers who had their portraits taken in Auckland studios before leaving for overseas duty or on their return or during leave. Have a go!
