Could New Zealand libraries have their own top-level domain name?

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has voted to relax the strict rules on top-level domain names such as .com, .org .nz.  Under the new plan, any company or organisation or individual could create their own domain name based on any string of letters or script (ie non-English). That means a library could become, for example, gisborne.library.nz.

Some higher body may need to own and administer the top-level domain name eg LIANZA, the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa - see www.lianza.org.nz

The .library.nz domain name would be a trusted brand in the hearts and minds of the communities we serve - a safe site for all ages, with access to high quality information and services.

No doubt, there will be a cost to do this - let's hope it's not prohibitive for any organisation to be able to do this.
