What is an interloan?

Interloan is resource sharing between libraries. Items not owned by Auckland City Libraries may be requested from another library. We also supply items to other libraries.

Interloan is not a document supply, general enquires or research service.

Before submitting an interloan request, please go to Can’t find it? This page covers alternatives to the interloan process.

For all interloan enquires ask a librarian.

Who can use this service?

Interloan is available to most members of Auckland City Libraries.

Youth members should discuss with their parents or guardian, as charges do apply.

If you are not yet a member, join now!

What can be interloaned?

This service is not limited to books. It may be possible to obtain newspaper or magazine articles, microfilm, theses, music scores, research papers, industrial standards, reports and more. In some circumstances videos, DVDs, audio books and CDs may also be available.

Some items you can keep (eg copies of journal articles), some you can borrow (eg most books, scores and CDs), and some must only be used in the library (eg theses, microfilm, fragile or rare items). The lending library determines conditions of loans.

We may buy recently published material for the library instead of obtaining it via interloan.

What if the item is not available in New Zealand?

It may be possible to obtain some material from overseas. Costs and delivery times vary; please ask a librarian to discuss your requirements.

How long will an interloan take?

This does vary; the item may not be immediately available at other libraries, or we may need to approach more than one library.

Most items arrive within two to four weeks. For urgent requests or to check the progress of a request, ask a librarian.

Is there a charge for the service?

Within New Zealand

The service fee is $5. This fee is non-refundable. On receipt of the item, there is a further $5 supply charge.

International or urgent

The service fee is $20. This fee is non-refundable.

Please be aware that supply charges incurred in obtaining international or urgent items are paid by the customer. These charges could include return delivery costs or charges imposed by the supplying library. Please email an interloan librarian to discuss these options, as charges and delivery times vary.

How do I pay?

Charges are loaded on your library card and should be paid at the earliest opportunity at any of our libraries.

Please be aware that charges over $10 owing on your library card will affect your ability to borrow, reserve or renew.

What happens once my item arrives?

We send you a letter when the library receives the item. Applicable charges are added to your library card.

Material you can keep

This is sent to your current postal or email address, as appropriate.

Material you can borrow

Material is issued on to your library card; you should collect it from the community library most convenient for you within a week.

Material you must only use in the library

Some items are supplied only on condition that they are used in the library. This typically applies to theses, microfilm, microfiche, research papers etc.

These items will be held for you in the Auckland Research Centre, located on the second floor of the Central City Library for the maximum time allowed by the lending library.

Loan periods and renewals

The initial loan period is 21 days; renewals (at no charge) may be available on request. Please contact an interloan librarian on (09) 307 7742.

Interloans returned past the due date incur daily overdue charges.

The lending library determines the issue period and any applicable use restrictions. All material is subject to recall by the owning institution at any time.

Return interloans to any Auckland City library (to the issues desk at the Central City Library) and include all accompanying jackets, forms or papers. Charges will apply for lost or damaged materials.
