What is an interloan?
Interloan is resource sharing between libraries. Items not owned by Auckland City Libraries may be requested from another library. We also supply items to other libraries.

Who can use this service?
The interloan service is available to most members of Auckland City Libraries. Youth members should discuss with their parent or guardian, as charges do apply. If you are not yet a member, join now!

What can be interloaned?
This service is not limited to books. It may be possible to obtain newspaper or magazine articles, microfilm, theses, music scores, research papers, industrial standards, reports, and more. In some circumstances videos, DVDs, audio books and CDs may also be available.
Some items you can keep (eg copies of journal articles), some you can borrow (eg most books, scores and CDs), and some must be used only in the library (eg theses, microfilm, fragile or rare items). The lending library determines conditions of loan.
We may buy recently published material for the library instead of obtaining it via interloan.

What if the item is not available in New Zealand?
It may be possible to obtain some material from overseas. Costs and delivery times vary; please email an interloans librarian to discuss your requirements.

How long will my interloan take?
This does vary; the item may not be immediately available at other libraries, or we may need to approach more than one library.
Most items arrive within two to four weeks. For urgent requests or to ask about the progress of a request, email an interloans librarian.

Is there a charge for the service?
Service fees are payable when requests are placed and are non-refundable. Supply charges are loaded on your library account when the item arrives in the library and should be paid at the first opportunity.
Within New Zealand For requests to other New Zealand libraries, a service fee of $5 is payable for placing the request, and a further $5 is payable on receipt of the requested item.
International or urgent The service fee is $20. Supply charges (eg return delivery, charges imposed by the supplying library) incurred are paid by the customer. Please email an interloans librarian to discuss these options as charges and delivery times vary.

How do I pay?
Charges should be paid at the earliest opportunity at any of our libraries. All our libraries accept payment by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or major credit card. Please be aware that charges over $10 owing on your library record will affect your ability to borrow, reserve and renew.

What happens once my item arrives?
We send you a letter when the library receives the item. Applicable charges are added to your library record.
Material you can keep
- This is sent to your current postal address.
Material you can borrow
- Material is issued on to your library card; you should collect it from the community library most convenient for you within a week.
- The initial loan period is 18 days; renewals (at no charge) may be available on request. Interloans returned past the due date incur daily overdue charges.
- The lending library determines the issue period and any applicable use restrictions. All material is subject to recall by the owning institution at any time.
- Interloans can be returned to any Auckland City library (to the issues desk at the Central City Library) and must include all accompanying jackets, forms or papers. Charges will be applied for lost or damaged materials.
Material you must only use in the library
- Some items are supplied only on the condition that they are used in the library. This typically applies to theses, microfilm, microfiche, research papers etc.
- These will be held for you in the Auckland Research Centre (2nd floor) in the Central City Library for the maximum time allowed by the lending library.
