Information about our photography collection.

Our photography collections contain over 250,000 images of New Zealand from the 1840s to the present day, with a strong emphasis on Auckland.
Included in the collection are historic surveys of Auckland buildings and architecture, social portraits, landscapes and cityscapes, advertising images, magazine and newspaper negatives and over 250 individual photo albums.

Henry Winkelmann,
Clifton Firth and
Herman John Schmidt form a prominent part of the collection.
These items are held in Special Collections, on the second floor of the Central City Library.
Heritage Images Online
Heritage Images Online contains over 30,000 digitised images from the photography collections.
It is possible to purchase reproductions of images in the photography collection. Please use our
online order form, or download order and permission forms within the database.
Selected images are also available for purchase from Special Collections at the Central City Library.
Photographers Database
The
Photographers Database is an index of photographers who have worked in New Zealand from the 1840s to the present day. It features a wide-ranging survey of their careers, professional relationships and places of work.
The database is a comprehensive and unique research tool for anyone interested in New Zealand photographers, New Zealand history or genealogy.
