Ngā Mātauranga Māori

Auckland City Libraries is home to 11 Ngā Mātauranga Māori collections.

Items in these collections are identifiable by kowhaiwhai spine labels. These collections include both lending and reference collections of Māori materials. At the Central Library the Ngā Mātauranga Māori collection is situated on the first floor.
 
The Ngā Mātauranga Māori collections include all material written about Māori and the Māori Worldview, both historic and contemporary. Items for the collection are selected based on their strong Māori content and subject matter.
 
Many of the Ngā Mātauranga Māori collections include children’s books and easy readers in te reo Māori. 
 

Learning te reo Māori

For anyone wishing to learn more about te reo Māori, Māori audio language courses are available free of charge, supplemented by a comprehensive collection of videos, DVDs, CDs, whakatauki, grammar books and dictionaries.
 

Whakapapa

For those wishing to research their whakapapa, Auckland City Libraries has a wide range of iwi histories and biographies, with a focus on Auckland and Northland tribal areas. Our whakapapa page has more information on how to access these resources, also linking to the iwidex database.
